The last time you walked King Street on a Friday night, the pedestrian block probably ended where it always has. Look again. The car-free stretch runs deeper toward Washington Street this season, and the restaurants that have opened in the last twelve months are clustered inside that new footprint or one block off it. That is not a coincidence.
Here is the through-line for late summer 2026 in Old Town: the neighborhood's dining and events calendar has quietly reorganized itself around a longer walk. The openings people are talking about, the festivals filling the waterfront, and the shows at The Lyceum all sit within a fifteen-minute stroll of each other. If you have been treating Old Town as a King Street corridor plus some outposts, the map has changed on you.
The 200 block is the hinge
Lower King Street's pedestrian zone has extended through the 200 block for the warm months, which turns what used to be a two-part evening (walk the waterfront, then jump to a restaurant) into one continuous route. Summer strolls from the waterfront through the dining corridor have never been easier.
That matters because the newer restaurants have not opened randomly. They cluster where the foot traffic now flows.

Two things jump out from that list. First, the D.C. crossover is real. Floriana, the Northern Italian favorite from Washington, D.C., opened inside the Atrium building in Old Town Alexandria in June 2026, offering housemade pastas, steaks, and all-day dining. That is a meaningful shift for the neighborhood: Old Town has always had a strong restaurant scene, but 2026 brings a new wave of concepts that push the neighborhood further toward genuine all-day destination status, with Floriana serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner rather than defaulting to a dinner-only operation. If you have a Saturday morning and a craving for house-made focaccia, that used to be a drive.
Second, Old Town North is finally in the conversation. Continues Arcade and Valletta Port both sit off the King Street spine, and both are doing enough volume to draw people who a year ago would have defaulted to the waterfront. Continues Arcade opened in summer 2025 in Old Town North with fifty vintage arcade cabinets, skee-ball and pinball alongside a full-service restaurant and bar from Iron Chef America alum Brian Lacayo with guidance from Top Chef's Spike Mendelsohn.
The Majestic reopened, and the coconut cake stayed
If you have lived here more than a few years, this one matters. The beloved Art Deco restaurant at 911 King Street reopened in April 2026 under new owner and longtime Chef Santiago Lopez, who spent 16 years helping build the Alexandria Restaurant Partners family, and the classics stay — including the famous coconut cake that's been a fixture since 2009.
That is the kind of continuity a neighborhood rarely gets when a restaurant changes hands. Read it as a signal: the operator kept the parts of the menu that made regulars regulars.
The late-summer calendar, roughly in the order you can use it
There is more happening in the next six weeks than most residents realize. Sorted by date so you can plan around it:
- Through July 31 — Find Waldo Local runs the entire month of July, with Old Town Books Junior partnering with Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association, culminating in a special celebration on July 31. Good excuse to walk kids through the boutiques.
- Sundays at 3 p.m. through August — The Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association's 36th Annual Summer Sundays Chamber Music Series runs live at The Lyceum in Old Town Alexandria every Sunday through August.
- July 24 and 25 — Marion Meadows with Alex Bugnon at Birchmere Music Hall, 7 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
- August 3 — Graham Nash at Birchmere, 7:30 p.m.
- August 14 through 23 — Alexandria Restaurant Week returns Friday, Aug. 14 through Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026. The ten-day stretch across two weekends is designed to give you time to book more than one meal, whether that's a special-occasion dinner or a casual weeknight out in a neighborhood you've been meaning to explore.

- August 28 — Raheem DeVaughn at Birchmere, 7:30 p.m.
- August 29 — The 2026 Around the World Cultural Food Festival at Oronoco Bay Park, 11 a.m.
- September 19 — Old Town Alexandria Oktoberfest at John Carlyle Square, 11 a.m.
- September 26 and 27 — Annual Art Festival at John Carlyle Square in the Eisenhower East/Old Town area, 10 to 5, free and open to all.
Restaurant Week is the anchor. The lineup and pricing were not yet posted at the time of writing. Organizers at Visit Alexandria have locked in the calendar but haven't yet released the roster of participating restaurants, this summer's menus or final pricing, and those typically arrive a few weeks out alongside a digital flipbook of menus. A resident tip that saves you an hour
Two small habits that pay off during the crowded weeks between Restaurant Week and Labor Day.
The Saturday morning move most out-of-towners miss: the Old Town Farmers' Market at Market Square is held each Saturday morning year-round, and the market has been at the same site for over 260 years, making it the oldest continuously operating farmers' market in the country. Get there before nine, hit produce, then walk five minutes to Maman for coffee. You have covered the pedestrian zone before the noon crowd fills it.
The weeknight move: reservations for the headliner openings, walk-in for the older rooms. Floriana is going to be booked. The Majestic will seat you at the bar. This is not complicated, but the reflex most residents fall into is the opposite.
What is still coming before year-end
A few more openings will land before winter and are worth watching if you want to be early on them.
Chef Peter Chang is targeting a fall 2026 opening for his next restaurant in Alexandria's South Alex development, a celebrated Szechuan master with multiple James Beard recognitions, and this latest opening marks the 19th restaurant in his growing portfolio. That is south of Old Town proper, but close enough to fold into a weekend rotation.
Grazie Nonna is also headed to Old Town, and Cherry on Top is coming to Old Town to blend coffee and wine in a laid-back setting, perfect for everything from an early espresso to an evening glass of wine. The all-day café-into-bar format is quietly becoming an Old Town pattern. It fits the longer pedestrian walk. It fits the crowd that wants to linger.
The point is not that Alexandria is getting more restaurants. Every walkable neighborhood in the DMV is getting more restaurants. The point is that Old Town's new places are pulling the neighborhood into a shape it did not quite have before: continuous, walkable from the waterfront through Washington Street, and open all day rather than just at dinner. The next time you plan a Saturday, plan it as one route instead of three stops.
